From Humble Beginnings…

A campervan, a surfboard, and an unquenched thirst for travel. I set off on a journey that would mark the start of a radical life shift. Driven by a deep desire for new experiences and a craving for connection to our natural home, I set off on an adventure with no end, travelling Aotearoa (New Zealand)’s South Island, surfing remote hidden coastlines, and spending some much-needed time “getting to know myself.”

It was during this experience in 2020 that I took a close look at my life, the path I was leading, and the trail of destruction left in its wake. I began to ask myself questions.

“Does it have to be this way?
Are there any solutions?”

When we look at nature, everything functions as one harmonious system… Every piece, from the smallest of insects to the largest of trees, is playing its part, singing its unique note in the orchestra of life, and it is this orchestra, with the whole choir working together, that is the foundation, the essential element for all creation.

“For the air you breathe in is the air the trees breathe out.”

But today we have a habit of breaking everything down, of measuring units while ignoring the whole. Because it makes economic sense to kill weeds, insects, and microbial life with a simple chemical spray, and to inject our plants and animals with hormones to artificially enhance our yields.

In the short term, we see imaginary profits. But in hindsight, it costs us everything…

• 24 Billion Tonnes of Fertile Topsoil Lost Every Year.
• One-Third of the World’s Soils Are Already Degraded.
• Up to 80% of Microbial Life Reduced Due to Chemical-Based Farming.
• 500 Ocean Dead Zones Created by Fertilizer Runoff.

If we keep heading this way, it doesn’t take a prophet to see our destination… But enough of the doomsday stuff. Because there are solutions, a lot of them! And most of them, well, they have been right in front of our faces the entire time…

NATURE!

It turns out the thing that existed long before humans, the oldest thing known in creation, the thing that birthed everything else, has a little bit of wisdom! Who would have thought…?

It’s becoming more and more apparent that viewing nature as some separate entity to be conquered and extracted from is only going to lead to our total, utter destruction… It’s time to change our ways, to take a seat in the orchestra, and start playing in tune with all life.

We must return to balance with the natural systems and cease this aimless fight against them. And it all starts with the way we treat our soil. This is where organic and regenerative agriculture principles fit in.

Eden’s Box is a tiny piece of this solution. On a mission to make organic food accessible for all Kiwis. Really, all the hard work is done by the local organic farms we have partnered with. The people who grow the rainbow of organic produce you see on our website, and of course, MAMA Nature.

Behind every perfect-looking product image is months of work, thousands of natural processes, growth, death, and rebirth, all working harmoniously, forming the tapestry of life that expresses itself in the form of a vegetable or fruit, arriving neatly packed at your door after clicking a few buttons on a screen.

Crazy, when you bring all of this into perspective, maybe organic produce isn’t actually that expensive after all.
